Christian Thielemann’s international fame rests to a large extent on his interpretations of Bruckner. In this concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker he conducts the composer’s most popular work, the Fourth Symphony, called the “Romantic”. To open the concert, Albrecht Mayer can be heard as soloist in the Oboe Concerto by Richard Strauss.

It was Hans von Bülow who said that Johannes Brahms’s Violin Concerto is a “concerto against the violin” – simply because the soloist is given little opportunity for virtuoso showmanship. In this concert, the Berliner Philharmoniker, soloist Guy Braunstein and conductor Andris Nelsons set about to uncover the evident as well as the hidden charms of the work.
They are a must see for all Claudio Abbado fans: Our recordings from Abbado’s time as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. These include legendary European and New Year’s Eve concerts as well as a complete recording of the Beethoven symphonies from Rome.

There is a gallery of symphonic pictures to admire in this concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle. Strolling through this gallery is like a tour through Europe – with stops in France, the Czech Republic, Austria and England.
In two respects, Pierre Boulez pays tribute to Igor Stravinsky in this concert from September 2010: firstly as the conductor of Stravinsky’s opera Le Rossignol, secondly with his own composition ...explosante-fixe..., which Boulez wrote in memory of his older colleague. The evening’s soloists included Emmanuel Pahud and Hannigan.
If you live in the UK, you have as many as three opportunities in the new season to experience the Berliner Philharmoniker live in a cinema near you.
